Hario Coffee Brewers: Precision Japanese Brewing for Coffee Enthusiasts

Hario is a Japanese brand founded in 1921 whose name translates directly to "king of glass." Since entering the coffee equipment market, Hario has become one of the most trusted names in manual brewing globally, known for combining heat resistant glass construction, precision engineering, and a deep respect for the craft of hand-brewed coffee. Their products are used by home brewers and professional baristas in cafés and World Brewers Cup competitions alike.

At Something's Brewing, we stock 44 Hario products across manual brewers, accessories, and barista tools, ranging from Rs. 370 for filter papers to Rs. 13,499 for the Hario Coffee Syphon. Every product in this collection is built around one principle: giving the brewer complete control over the extraction.

About Hario: Japan's Pioneer of Manual Coffee Brewing

Hario began as a producer of heat resistant scientific glassware before transitioning into coffee equipment. This background in laboratory glass is what defines the brand. Every brewer, server, and accessory Hario makes reflects the same standards of heat tolerance, material integrity, and precision that their scientific products demanded.

The brand's defining philosophy is manual brewing. While much of the coffee equipment market moved toward automation in the second half of the 20th century, Hario stayed committed to pour over, syphon, and hand-ground coffee. This focus produced the V60, the dripper that transformed the global specialty coffee movement and introduced a generation of home brewers to the idea that they could brew coffee as good as any café.

In India, Hario is well appreciated for the clarity and aesthetic appeal their glass products bring to a coffee setup. The brand is a natural starting point for anyone entering specialty home brewing for the first time.

The Hario V60: The Brewer That Changed Pour Over Coffee

The Hario V60 is the most iconic manual brewer in the world and the centrepiece of this collection. Its name comes from the shape: a V-shaped cone with a 60-degree angle. The spiral ribs running along the inside of the cone are what set it apart from every other dripper.

These spiral ribs create an air channel between the filter paper and the cone walls, allowing coffee to flow outward as well as downward. This improves airflow during extraction, extends the contact time between water and coffee, and allows you to control the brew speed through your pour rate. The result is a clean, bright, nuanced cup that highlights the specific character of the coffee beans being used far more clearly than immersion brewers like the French Press.

The V60 is available in multiple materials: polypropylene plastic which is lightweight, durable, and ideal for travel; ceramic which retains heat better during brewing; and glass which gives you the cleanest visual experience of the brew. Each material produces a slightly different thermal profile during extraction, which gives experienced brewers a meaningful variable to experiment with.

What Is in the Hario Collection at Something's Brewing

V60 Drippers and Servers

The V60 Dripper Clear is the most accessible entry point into pour over brewing, starting at Rs. 579. The Hario Ceramic V60 Dripper and Pot Set at Rs. 3,150 gives you both a dripper and a dedicated server in one purchase, making it the most practical setup for brewing directly into a carafe. The Range Coffee Server is also available separately for those who already own a V60 dripper and want an elegant glass vessel to brew into.

Hario Coffee Syphon

The Hario Coffee Syphon is one of the most visually dramatic and technically interesting brewers available. It uses vapour pressure to push water from a lower glass globe into an upper chamber where it mixes with coffee grounds, then draws the brewed coffee back through a cloth filter as the heat source is removed. The result is an exceptionally clean, smooth, and aromatic cup that is unlike anything produced by simpler brewers.

The Hario Coffee Syphon is available in a 3 cup version at Rs. 9,599 and a 5 cup version at Rs. 10,499. Both use a cloth filter and an alcohol or butane burner as the heat source.

Hario Cafe Press French Press

The Hario Cafe Press Slim S is a slim, elegant French Press that brews 300 to 350ml per session, suited for one to two people. It is available at Rs. 2,099 in black and Rs. 2,450 in red. The glass body, fine mesh plunger, and slim form factor make it one of the most refined French Press options in the Something's Brewing range, without the bulk of larger carafes.

Hario Cold Brew Products

Hario's cold brew range uses the same glass and precision filter construction as their hot brew products. Cold brew servers and glass bottles with filter rods allow you to steep coarsely ground coffee directly in the fridge and serve cold without any separate straining required.

Filter Papers

Hario paper filters are designed specifically for V60 drippers and are available in two types. Bleached filters (white) start at Rs. 370 and are treated with oxygen bleaching to remove any paper taste. Unbleached filters (brown/natural) start at Rs. 390 and are untreated, which some brewers prefer. Both produce excellent clarity in the cup. The choice between them is largely personal preference. Filters are also available for the Coffee Syphon's cloth filter system.

Hario Drip Scale

The Hario Drip Scale for Espresso and Manual Brewing is a precision scale with 0.1 gram accuracy and a built-in timer, making it ideal for both pour over brewing and espresso dosing. Accurate weighing of both coffee and water is the single most reliable way to achieve consistent brew ratios. This scale provides that with a compact, mat-friendly design that sits neatly under a V60 or espresso portafilter. Explore our full range of coffee weighing scales for more options.

Hario Hand Grinder

The Hario Coffee Mill Smart G is a compact ceramic burr hand grinder suited for travel and single dose brewing. The ceramic burrs are durable, do not retain heat, and produce consistent grinds across a range of settings from French Press through espresso. The handle folds into the body for easy storage. For more hand grinder options across different price points and burr types, browse our hand coffee grinder collection.

Which Hario Product Is Right for You?

If you are new to manual brewing and want to start with pour over, the V60 Plastic Dripper is the most accessible and lowest commitment entry point. It is light, indestructible, and produces the same quality cup as the ceramic or glass versions.

If you already own a V60 and want to improve consistency, the Hario Drip Scale is the highest impact next purchase. Accurate weighing consistently outperforms guesswork in pour over brewing.

If you prefer a full-bodied, textured cup over clarity and brightness, the Hario Cafe Press Slim S gives you a refined French Press experience in a compact, visually appealing form.

If you want to explore the most technically impressive and theatrically beautiful brewing method available, the Hario Coffee Syphon is an extraordinary brewer that produces an exceptionally clean cup and makes the entire process visible.

If freshness and portability matter most, the Hario Coffee Mill Smart G paired with any V60 dripper gives you a complete specialty coffee setup that fits in a travel bag.

Getting the Best From Your Hario Brewer

For V60 pour over, use a medium grind and water at 92 to 96 degrees Celsius. Start with a 1:15 coffee to water ratio: 15 grams of coffee and 225ml of water. Pre-wet the filter paper with hot water before adding coffee to remove any paper taste and warm the dripper. Pour 30 to 40ml of water first to bloom the grounds for 30 seconds, then add the rest in slow, controlled pours over two to three minutes.

For the French Press, use a medium coarse grind and steep for exactly 4 minutes before pressing slowly. Decant immediately after pressing to stop extraction.

For the Syphon, use a medium fine grind. Heat the lower globe until water rises into the upper chamber, add coffee, stir gently, steep for 60 to 90 seconds, then remove the heat source and allow the brewed coffee to draw back down through the filter into the lower globe.

Pair any Hario brewer with freshly roasted specialty beans from Indian roasters for the clearest expression of the bean's character. Light to medium roasts with fruity or floral notes perform particularly well in the V60 and Syphon. For the French Press, medium to dark roasts with chocolate and caramel notes suit the full-bodied immersion style. FAQ's

What size Hario V60 should I buy?
The V60 comes in two common sizes: 01 for one to two cups and 02 for two to four cups. For most home brewers, the 02 is the more practical choice as it gives you room to brew for yourself and one other person without needing to brew twice. Single drinkers who prefer freshness above all should consider the 01.
What is the difference between Hario bleached and unbleached filter papers?
Bleached filters are oxygen-treated to remove natural paper taste and are white in colour. Unbleached filters are untreated and are brown or natural in colour. Both perform equally well in terms of flow rate and flavour clarity when properly rinsed before brewing. The choice is personal preference and for some brewers an environmental consideration.
How many cups does the Hario Coffee Syphon make?
The 3 cup Syphon at Rs. 9,599 produces approximately 360 to 450ml of brewed coffee per session. The 5 cup Syphon at Rs. 10,499 produces approximately 600 to 700ml. Syphon sizing refers to Japanese-style small cups of around 120ml each, so both models produce enough for two to three standard Western-sized cups per brew.
Do Hario filter papers work with other pour over drippers?
Hario filter papers are designed specifically for V60 drippers and are cone-shaped. They do not fit flat-bottomed drippers or basket-style filters used in Chemex or standard drip machines. Always match filter paper shape to your specific dripper model to ensure proper fit and flow rate.
Is the Hario V60 good for beginners?
Yes. The V60 is one of the most commonly recommended first pour over brewers precisely because it is forgiving enough to produce a good cup on the first try while rewarding skill development over time. The plastic version in particular is inexpensive and durable, making it an ideal starting point before committing to a ceramic or glass model.
How accurate is the Hario Drip Scale?
The Hario Drip Scale measures to 0.1 gram accuracy with a built-in timer accurate to the second. It is designed specifically for coffee use, with a maximum capacity of 2 kilograms and a response time fast enough to track live pouring without lag. It is suitable for both pour over and espresso dosing.
