Brand Overview
Baratza was founded in Seattle in 1999 by Kyle Anderson and Kyra Kennedy. Anderson brought engineering experience from Acorto, a commercial espresso machine company he'd founded a decade earlier, while Kennedy brought a background in coffee equipment sales. Together, they set out to close a gap in the market, high-quality, precision grinding that had, until then, mostly been reserved for commercial equipment and expensive professional machines.
Their first proprietary grinder, the Virtuoso, launched in the mid-2000s and helped establish Baratza's reputation for combining professional-grade grinding with genuinely accessible, user-friendly design. In 2020, Baratza was acquired by Breville Group, a move that combined Baratza's grinder engineering with Breville's global manufacturing and distribution, while Baratza's original design philosophy and product line have continued largely unchanged since.
What Sets Baratza Grinders Apart
Baratza grinders are built around consistency and repairability. Rather than treating a grinder as disposable once a part wears out, Baratza designs its machines to be serviced and repaired, which is a meaningful part of why their grinders are often estimated to last 5 to 10 years or more with proper care.
Every model uses conical burrs rather than blades, which is the single biggest factor in producing a uniform grind. Uneven grind sizes are one of the most common reasons home-brewed coffee tastes inconsistent from cup to cup. This focus on durability, paired with precise, repeatable grind settings, is why Baratza remains a go-to recommendation for home brewers moving up from an entry-level or blade grinder.
A Closer Look at Each Model
Baratza Encore is the brand's most popular entry-level grinder, with 40 individual grind settings covering everything from cold brew to espresso. Conical burrs deliver consistent grinds, and a simple adjustment knob keeps operation straightforward for beginners who brew across multiple methods.
Baratza Encore ESP is built specifically with espresso in mind, offering high-resolution settings (#1 to #20) for espresso and a broader range (#21 to #40) for filter, French press, or cold brew. A single pulse button keeps daily use simple despite the added precision.
Baratza Sette 270 is a hands-free grinder with macro and micro adjustment for repeatable dosing, accurate to the tenth of a second. Its no-chute design reduces grind retention and waste, and it includes a portafilter stand for hands-free collection.
Baratza Sette 270 Wi builds on the Sette 270 with an integrated Acaia weighing scale for 0.1g dosing precision, plus direct-to-portafilter dosing that removes the need to scoop grounds manually.
Baratza Virtuoso+ is a compact, quiet grinder built around a precision M2 conical steel burr, with integrated barista lights that let you keep an eye on the grind as it happens.
Choosing the Right Baratza Grinder for You
If you're just getting into home brewing across multiple methods, the Encore is the natural starting point. If espresso is your main focus, the Encore ESP or Sette 270 offer meaningfully more precision for dialling in shots. For those who want to remove weighing from the workflow entirely, the Sette 270 Wi's integrated scale is worth the extra investment, and for a quiet, compact daily driver, the Virtuoso+ fits well into smaller kitchens.
Whichever model you choose, pairing it with a reliable espresso machine or pour over setup rounds out a genuinely capable home brewing station.
