The Budan Coffee Tamper is a classic tamping tool that pairs a machined stainless steel base with a wooden handle. It helps you brew better espresso by making your tamp flat, firm and repeatable, which is what even extraction depends on.

Why a flat base matters:- An uneven tamp leaves one side of the coffee bed denser than the other. Water escapes through the loose side, part of the coffee over extracts and part barely extracts at all, and the shot arrives bitter and sour at the same time. A properly machined base removes that risk before it starts.

Weight that works for you:- The tamper carries enough mass that gravity does part of the job, so your wrist does less work to reach the same pressure. Around 15 to 20kg is all espresso asks for, and being consistent between shots matters more than hitting an exact number.

Sizing:- 58mm is the commercial standard and fits most semi automatic and prosumer machines. It will not work with 51mm or 54mm baskets, so check the size stamped on your portafilter before ordering if you are unsure.

Technique:- Set the tamper flat and check it sits level before applying pressure. Press straight down with your wrist and elbow in line above the basket, then lift without twisting so the surface of the puck stays intact.

Care:- Wipe the base after each session so coffee oils do not dull the finish. Hand wash only, since a dishwasher will dry out and crack the wooden handle over time.

FAQs

Can I use this tamper with my espresso machine of 54mm?
This Budan Tamper can only be used with a 58mm portafilter of any espresso machine.
Do I still need a leveller if I have a good tamper?
Not necessarily, but a leveller evens out the coffee bed before you press. Tamping fixes density, distribution fixes the bed. They solve different problems.
Can I use this tamper with a bottomless portafilter?
Yes, and a bottomless portafilter is the best way to check your technique. Channelling shows up immediately as spraying from one side of the basket.
What is the difference between this and the tamper that came with my machine?
Included tampers are usually light plastic and often slightly undersized, which leaves a ring of untamped coffee around the edge. A correctly sized steel tamper covers the full basket and holds its flatness over years of use.
Will it fit a naked or double spout portafilter?
Both, as long as the basket is 58mm. The tamper works on the basket rather than the portafilter body, so spout type makes no difference.
